ZOMG!

28 08 2009
I did it on my alt. Sigh.

I did it on my alt. Sigh.

We didn’t have enough people tonight to run a 25-man, so we put together a 10-man OS+3. We had some issues at the beginning as we were short on true tanks, but I eventually hopped on my paladin and we started working on a one-tank one-healer strategy – except we had two healers in the riad for a while. Once we figured that out and got everything rolling (and after a few DPS swapping around), we got Sarth consistently to 15% or below for 6 or 7 straight attempts. Trash respawned, so we recleared – and after 3 more attempts and a change in Bloodlust timing, we finally burned through the last few percent and got OF THE NIGHTFALL.

Pretty exciting business. The only regret I have is that I don’t have the title on my main. Oh well, there’s always next time, right? =)

More news for my paladin!

25 08 2009

Sorry about the delay on getting BlizzCon info and impressions out. I’ve been packing for college – I leave tomorrow.

Just some quick notes on the paladin before I head to bed – I did a timed Oculus today, we finished with 3 minutes to spare despite only having 3 drakes, so I got the speed achievement as well as my Red Proto-Drake in the mail. Of course, I’m nowhere close to having enough gold to use it. =)

I also tanked a few bosses in 10-Ulduar tonight – we did Flame Leviathan, XT (I main tanked), Kolo (main tanked again), and Auriaya (who I also main tanked). Auriaya dropped a shield for me too, so I was able to upgrade my old Titansteel Shield wall which I had had since shortly after I hit 80.

This also put my paladin very close gear-wise to where my mage is – basically the next upgrade I get for the paladin will make her have better gear than my poor mage. As sad as that sounds, I do really enjoy tanking, and am looking forward to continuing to tank in Ulduar and also more raids past that.

BlizzCon Impressions: Friday (Part 1)

23 08 2009

The best thing to do is probably gonna be to put everything in chronological order, except for…

GRUNTY THE MURLOC MARINE IS AMAZING. Seriously, he’s unbelievably cute.

Moving on, we got in line for entrance at around 7:30 on Friday, so we had 2 1/2 hours to burn in line. Hit the store early, which turned out to be a good idea – got the merchandise early and was able to take it back to the hotel later on. We got out of the store line just in time to find some seats for the opening ceremony – where they hit us with some amazing news. There was a wonderfully funny moment when the first encounter with Onyxia was referred to as “merely a setback” – in fact, there were great in-jokes throughout the con, ranging from ret paladin nerfs to Ghostcrawler’s famous “31 bosses in Icecrown Citadel” post.

Chris Metzen made the big announcements at the opening ceremony, though, unveiling the Monk class in Diablo III (the trailer for that was amazing) as well as giving us the Cataclysm trailer. Which was probably one of the most epic trailers I’ve ever seen. Azeroth is getting redone, Deathwing is back, goblins and worgen were confirmed as playable (and were playable at the con! I’ll get to that later), flying is available everywhere, we’re getting Heroic Shadowfang Keep (which I’ve been joking about since forever), there’s a guild progression system, a sunken city, a new secondary profession, and a new way to progress level-capped characters. I’ll go a little more in depth on most of this later in my blog, but suffice to say that this was one of the best trailers I’ve seen to date. The only thing that could have made it better was if Blizzard’s cinematic team had done it instead of using game-quality graphics. (Which is not to say game-quality graphics aren’t good; the new water effect is unbelievable, for one, from what I saw in the trailer.)

After the opening ceremony ended, I headed to the back of the hall to meet up with my friend and guildie Valantin, and we watched the WoW Preview Panel. They gave us some pretty amazing details on some features of the next expansion – for starters, despite there only being 5 new levels, there’s a lot of new endgame and leveling content. According to a later panel, there are going to be 4 raids and 8 instances, plus H-Deadmines and H-SFK, when the expansion ships. Pretty awesome. In addition to the new endgame stuff, there’s going to be 7 new zones as well – including Hyjal, which I’ve been waiting for since I began playing, and Uldum, as well as some other awesome ones. Every zone is getting revamped, with updated terrain, quests, items, etc. The whole leveling path is changing, too.

Another big feature mentioned in this panel was phased terrain – such as a coastline getting pushed back over time, which is pretty epic. They also expanded a little bit on stuff like Archaeology, but it’s going to be a little more logical if I talk about that later in the post.

As far as flying goes, it was confirmed that we’ll be able to fly ANYWHERE – really looking forward to being able to fly old-world, although I’m concerned about lowbies getting ganked from above now. We’ll have to see what happens, I suppose.

The revamping of zones is a bit different between zone and zone though – for example, Elwynn is just getting quest chains and so forth revamped, while something like the Barrens gets cleaved in half and split into two zones, or Desolace becomes a very….green zone. Much different than what it is now, hehe. It’s official now, too, by the way – Naralex succeeded in regrowing the Barrens, so it’s very green now as well.

The preview panelists showed us a picture of the Horde Zoram Strand outpost – it’s much more fortified now. They also essentially said that Garrosh was going to play a HUGE role in the military strategy of the Horde when they said that he was responsible for the fortification of this and other areas. Org’s totally changed, it’s much more fortified too – but Undercity has, IMO, the biggest change. They completely revamped it so it’s flyable now, which is AWESOME.

One of the new zones – the Sunken City of Vashj’ir – is completely underwater. However, although this may
not seem particularly awesome, they said that it’s going to be like land movement when you’re not in
combat, which should be nice. Underwater mounts were also mentioned. I’m not going to go into detail on the other zones – suffice to say that they’re rather awesome, and I’m looking forward to questing in ‘em. Malfurion’s awoken from the Emerald Dream, too, so that’s great.

After the preview panel, I met up with Michelle, Rauly, Tril, DJ, Kyle, and everyone else – we talked for a bit, then I disappeared to go to the “The Guild” panel. Felicia Day is definitely a great ambassador for gaming, and it was great to watch the cast interact on stage -they all work so well together.

Next up was the Classes, Items, and Professions panel – right off the bat, they gave us the new Goblin and Worgen racials.

Goblin:

-20 yard jump OR belt rockets fired at enemy on a shared 2 minute cooldown
-Bank access from anywhere every 30 minutes
-1% passive haste
-Alchemy +15 and more bonus from Healing/Mana potions
-Best reputation discount for repairs no matter what

Worgen:

-70% increased movement speed for 6 seconds (10 in demo) – 3 minute CD
-1% passive damage
-Curse/Disease duration reduced by 15%
-Skinning +15, don’t need skinning knife, skins quickly
-Worgen form – cosmetic only, forced into it while in combat

Neither goblins or worgen can roll paladin; goblins can’t have druids; and worgen can’t have shamen. That said, there were a lot of new class/race combinations added in, such as Tauren Paladins/Priests (“holy cows”), Orc Mages, Night Elf Mages, and Blood Elf Warriors, among others.

This is just part one of my notes on BlizzCon – I’ll continue on about the class panel tomorrow, but I fly out of LAX tomorrow and I’m a bit tired. More on the way tomorrow!

BlizzCon: Night 1

21 08 2009

Well, ran the heroic daily today before I left, got the ring for my paladin ;) It’s wonderful! I’m up over 100000 effective health self-buffed now.

Headed out to the airport and was shortly joined by my good friend “Twilight Vanquisher Jason” (I was told to put the title on), and we got underway. Picked up by Jason’s friend Christine at the airport, and rolled on down to Anaheim. Good times.

What a wonderful night!

Got to meet up with Tril and Kyle at the wow.com meetup; we were both standing next to the fountain, of course didn’t recognize each other till I texted her “So are you standing right in front of me?” and sure enough she was! It was ridiculously crowded, so we made our way back to their hotel and got some pizza while waiting for Michelle and Sperro and Bio. All sorts of fun.

You know, I was worried we’d run out of stuff to talk about after we got through the standard WoW stuff (figured not having met face-to-face before things would be more awkward), but no way – all sorts of stuff to talk about. Once everyone else showed up things were amazing; Kyle and I went out front to meet up with Michelle, Sperro, and Bio, and instantly there was just this great atmosphere of camaraderie. It really made me believe that us Neo Imperela people had something more than most guilds do; we’re still keeping in touch, talking, laughing…despite not having met before in real life. Although Bio won’t be making the con, it was amazing to get the chance to hang with him tonight; got a chance to talk about a bunch of stuff, and he’s just an awesome guy!

We’ve all talked about getting in touch tomorrow at the con, so that’s going to be a blast. Gonna make some introductions tomorrow between people and it’s going to be a blast.

Off to BlizzCon!

20 08 2009

Well, I’m on my way. =)

My flight for California leaves in a little more than 2 1/2 hours; I’m really excited. I’ve been wanting to go for a few years, and now I’m finally getting to live the dream. Hoping to meet up with some guildies/friends tonight at the wow.com gathering, hopefully those plans work properly. Should be an absolute blast. I’ll keep you all posted with (hopefully) nightly blogs from my hotel room.

If you’re gonna be down in Anaheim, and want to say hi at the con, go ahead and leave a comment; just let me know where you’ll be at some point during the con and I’ll try and head over and say hello.

Heroic progression on the paladin; 3.2.2 mage changes

17 08 2009

Somehow, and I don’t know how, my paladin only has 3 achievements left till she gets her Red Proto-Drake after getting all of the Old Kingdom achievements today, along with Less-rabi yesterday. She still isn’t even close to epic flying, though. Ah well.

The last three achievements are in Oculus; almost got the timed run today, but someone D/C’d during the Eregos encounter. Also still have to ride a green drake and do a run with no red drakes. Should be fun times.

My more exciting news – and the news that meant I had to write something up here as soon as I found out – was contained in the 3.2.2 PTR patch notes.

Mages are getting a buff to Arcane Blast. It stacks 4 times now, and the 40% proc rate from Arcane Blast towards Missile Barrage means it should be virtually ALWAYS up after 4 stacks. They also nerfed the mana increase per Arcane Blast debuff from 200% to 130%, and made Missile Barrage-procced Arcane Missiles a free cast. Supposedly, it’s 3% DPS over TTW Fireball on stationary fights and 1% over on mobile fights. Looking forward to trying this one out. =)

What a night…

13 08 2009

Over the last few days, I’ve been steadily whittling away at my paladin’s Heroic achievements; she’s currently 8 away from Glory of the Hero, which comes with a lovely Red Proto-Drake that she can’t even use yet. That said, I’ve been trying to get her involved in more 10-mans and such recently, with a 10-man clear of Trial of the Crusader this week as well as getting her into the first night of this week’s 10-Ulduar run.

I spent all day today working on getting Titansteel Bars for my crafted belt – still don’t quite have enough, but I’m getting there. When it came to be raid time tonight, I happened to be on the paladin, so I hopped in raid intending just to save a spot for my mage when I logged over. Surprisingly, however, this proved to be unnecessary; we didn’t have enough people to go to 25-man tonight, so we did a 10-man instead. Even more surprisingly, I was tanking (and again, I ended up tanking a boss that we had only downed once or twice before), and most surprisingly of all, I was leading the raid.

That’s right – no officers were in raid tonight (although one got the group together, he sat for someone else), so I was given raid lead and told to do some work in Ulduar. We did a good job of two-shotting Freya (unexpected, to be honest; I know some people hadn’t done that fight before with Cloudy Day), and then got Mimiron to Phase 3 (although we’ve downed him once, very few if any people in last night’s raid group had done so) before finishing the night with an Iron Council kill (which incidentally netted my paladin the Antechamber of Ulduar achievement). I got some great tanking experience on Council – I was tanking Steelbreaker and Runemaster Molgeim, so I was busy dragging them out of Runes of Power, cleansing Fusion Punch off of myself, and trying to keep threat at the same time. It was really a lot of fun.

As much fun as it was, though, it’s really exhausting leading a raid. Although I’m usually good for 3-4 heroics after raid, tonight I barely struggled through one with the help of caffeine. It’s a lot of work, and it’s amazing now to look back and see the people that do this 3-4 days a week in our guild. I don’t think I did a particularly bad job of leading – we killed some semi-progression bosses as well as getting Mimiron down pretty far – but it is somewhat stressful and certainly requires a lot more effort than simply DPSing does. That said, it was a good experience, and I’m glad to have done it. As hard as it was, I’d gladly do it again.

Teeth are hurting so I’m going to cut this post a bit short – got wisdom teeth extracted on Monday, so have been playing through that. =)

Achievement Mania

9 08 2009

Last night was great! Got a couple awesome achievements on teh paladin – more, again, that I’m missing on my mage. We did 5 Ruby Drakes (well, 4, plus Fenrír healing the tanking drake) in Oculus, and picked up both Amber and Emerald Void. Tanked Chaos Theory in Nexus too (almost got Split Personality, but the Frost mage wouldn’t die cause she was channeling Blizzard), and that put me up over 1900 achievement points on the paladin. Pretty excited about that. If you put my mage’s and my paladin’s achievements together, I’d be about 2 away from the Red Proto-Drake. :)

I also did some looking into the new Crusader-only dailies on my mage. They look pretty nice, and the guaranteed Champion’s Seal is cool.

Got up to 57 Emblems of Conquest on my mage, too! He still needs the Tier 8.5 chest, so I’ll be picking that up tonight. Really excited to get that out of the way.

Finally, after I ran my daily heroic marathon, I picked up the new orphan in Dalaran (got a Gorloc), flew all over Northrend, and got my 50th non-combat pet in about 15 minutes – and then got Stinker in the mail! My next goal is to get some mount achievements; I heard the cost for epic mounts got nerfed, so I can pick those up for cheap now.

3.2’s arrival and what I’ve done with it.

6 08 2009

I said I didn’t like the badge change.

I didn’t say I wouldn’t take full advantage of it.

Since 3.2, I’ve run oodles of heroics on my paladin; she’s almost got enough badges (just from 2 days!) to buy her T8.5 chest. Raiding has been difficult for me as I have been working past the start of raid time all week, so I’ve made up for it by running 5 heroics Tuesday night, and then another 7 last night. It was a bit weird raiding without some of my addons, ubt I think I’ve got most of the vital ones updated, so everything’s good there. I’m hoping to get a glimpse at the new raid on Friday (when I don’t work), but nothing’s certain.

The new 5-man’s pretty awesome! I like how heroic difficulty in there drops 10-Ulduar quality gear. I’m going to try and get that sword for my paladin (who’s currently using Slayer of the Lifeless), and maybe the dagger for my mage too.

All in all, I’m pretty impressed with the patch. I like a lot of the changes, and am looking forward to trying the raids out after I finish work next week.
